The Filipino-American Association
of Carson City, Nevada, was conceived in 1992 with Rico Javier as
the first president. In 1995, Manny Israel became the next president
with Alicia Eidel taken over the duties in 1997. In 1999, Oscar Canonigo
was the last association president, when it was decided in 2001, that
a board of directors would oversee the Fil-Am association.
During a members 2003 meeting, it was agreed to change
back to a Board of Governors/Officers instead of a Board of Directors.
On September 27th, 2003, Evangeline Javier was inducted as the next
President of the Association.
From its inception, the Association focused on family
values. The smell and tastes of Filipino-American cuisine, international
music, and dance indoor and out characterized meetings at homes. In 1994,
the Association entered a beautiful, prize winning float, in the annual
Nevada Day parade and the first Santacruzan was held at the Pony Express
Pavilion in Carson City's Mills Park.
In 1995, the association participated in the Reno Sierra-Folk
Festival and presented numerous cultural performances at Western Nevada
Community College located in Carson City. The Santacruzan celebration for
that year was held at the Hilton hotel in Reno.
A Scholarship Program in 1997 was formed to motivate our
members children to excel and continue their education and contribute positively
to their community. Two scholarships were awarded 1998, and four in 1999.
The Association made philanthropic goals, contributing
to oblate missions in the Philippines, and to Camp TLC, an annual summer
camp located in Lake Tahoe for children who are terminally ill. It helped
allow these children to just be kids in an environment away from doctors.
To this day, the Association continues to participate in
numerous cultural presentations at Western Nevada Community College, the
Reno Sierra-Folk Festival, Asian Pacific Festival in Reno, the Arts Council
of Carson City, and the Nevada Day Parade.
